Does Obama have an edge with Catholics?

A CARA study released this week showed more Catholics identified with the Democratic Party

A study titled "Election Forecast '08" released this week by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University analyzed data on party identification and the social, political and moral views of the estimated 47 million potential Catholic voters in the November election.

Both parties have seen a loss in the number of Catholics who identify as either Democrat or Repulican since the 2004 election. The study found that the majority of Catholics, over 19 million (41%) remained unaffiliated with either party. Currently, 10 million, (38%)of Catholic voters identify with the Democratic Party, compared to 10 million (21%) with the Republican Party.

"If Catholics stick to their current party identification when voting for president, (presumptive Democratic nominee Sen.) Barack Obama would have the potential edge over (presumptive Republican nominee Sen.) John McCain among Catholics by more than 8 million," the report said,

The study confirmed that Catholics who looked to the pope, bishops in forming their consciences about what is morally acceptable were more likely than others to say they were Republicans. entire report

McCain endorses California’s protect marriage amendment

U.S. Senator John McCain yesterday declared his support for the California Protection of Marriage initiative on the state's November ballot, leaders of the ProtectMarriage.com campaign announced.

In an email received by the ProtectMarriage.com campaign, Senator McCain issued the following statement: "I support the efforts of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman, just as we did in my home state of Arizona. I do not believe judges should be making these decisions."

What is Senator Obama's position on Marriage?

Senator Obam feels the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) should be repealed. DOMA defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman for purposes of all federal laws, and provides that states need not recognize a marriage from another state if it is between persons of the same sex. Forty states have their own Defense of Marriage Acts (DOMAs).

US Senate
Pending Legislation
Marriage Protection Introduced in the Senate

Saying that activist judges are attempting to redefine one of our nation’s most sacred institutions, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today introduced the Marriage Protection Act, which would amend our Constitution to declare that marriage is a union between one man and one woman.

“19 states have passed laws and 26 states have amended their constitution to protect traditional marriage,” Sen. Wicker said.  “Rather than giving unelected activist judges the opportunity to legislate from the bench, this amendment will reaffirm what most Americans believe – marriage is between a man and a woman.”

This Constitutional Amendment simply states: “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman.  Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.”

Wicker’s bill is the Senate companion to House legislation introduced by Rep. Paul Broun, R-GA. (WICKER.SENATE.GOV)

Wal-Mart tells Planned Parenthood - Not in our Parking Lot

A Wal-Mart parking lot in Richland, Washington is the latest front-line in the battle against abortion-giant, Planned Parenthood

At the request of hundreds of pro-lifers, the store cancelled an event in which Planned Parenthood would pass out information in the lot June 27.
American Life League sent out a press release June 26 to pro-lifers across the country informing them of this latest Planned Parenthood encroachment into neighborhood retailers.

“It’s hard enough for parents to safeguard their children from Planned Parenthood’s pervasive sexualized propaganda,” said Marie Hahnenberg, a researcher with American Life League. “They shouldn’t have to worry about exposing their kids to Planned Parenthood’s aggressive agenda even in Wal-Mart’s parking lot.”

Local protests were led by Jim Toth, pro-life chairman of the Knight of Columbus for the state of Washington, and after reportedly hundreds of calls and e-mails, the store decided to cancel the event.

“We thank Wal-Mart for taking a stand against Planned Parenthood,” Hahnenberg continued. “In the spirit of Sam Walton, Wal-Mart has put the best interest of its customers first and they are to be commended for their decision. We’d also like to especially congratulate Jim and the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Council in Kennewick, Washington, as well as the hundreds of pro-lifers across the country who responded with calls, prayers, and support.”

Californians Against Assisted Suicide: Extreme and Divisive Language Amended Out of AB 2747

After three defeats of assisted suicide legislation in just as many years, the pro-assisted suicide group Compassion and Choices (C&C) suffered another setback with their recent offering, AB 2747 (Berg). This bill came before the Senate Health Committee on Wednesday facing overwhelming opposition from a physician organization specializing in end-of-life care as well as from disability rights and civil rights groups. After failing to get enough votes on the first try, the author significantly amended the bill to remove its extreme and divisive proposals. Only then did the bill receive enough votes for passage.

Arizona puts same-sex marriage ban on ballot again

The Arizona Senate joined the Arizona House of Representatives in voting to refer a state constitutional amendment on the definition of marriage to the November ballot. The Senate's action places the following proposed constitutional amendment before the voters:

"Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state."

Court overturns injunction on South Dakota abortion law - a big loss for Planned Parenthood

A federal appeals court ruled that South Dakota can begin enforcing a law requiring doctors to tell women seeking abortions that the procedure ends a human life. The 7-4 decision by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis sends the case back to U.S. District Judge Karen Schreier of Rapid City for proceedings that will result in a decision on whether the law passed by the 2005 South Dakota Legislature is constitutional.

Planned Parenthood argued that forcing doctors to tell the truth to women about abortion violates free speech rights.

The 2005 law would make doctors tell women "that the abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being." Women also would have to be told they have a right to continue a pregnancy and that abortion may cause women psychological harm, including thoughts of suicide. read more AP

Planned Parenthood Benefit Removed from War Supplemental Bill

A provision that would have benefited Planned Parenthood was stripped at the last minute from the War Supplemental Bill.  This provision would have allowed for certain Planned Parenthood clinics and university healthcare centers to get drugs at nominal prices, allowing for easier and cheaper distribution of controversial drugs such as Plan B.  The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill to fund our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Florida Bishops Ask Governor to Stop Executions The archbishops and bishops of Florida have delivered a letter to Florida Governor Charlie Crist urging him to stop executions in the state, beginning with the scheduled July 1 execution.

Whom Can I Vote? The bottom line is that abortion is always wrong, period. Likewise all assaults on innocent human life, such as "research" that destroys embryonic human beings and euthanasia. Cloning is also always and everywhere evil, no exceptions.
