For Catholics, public virtue is as important as private virtue in building up the common good. In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation. --Faithful Citizenship, USCCB
CT Catholic Conference: Protect Marriage, Oppose HB5925

Adoption of HB 5925 would begin to erode the definition of marriage in our state and expose current state policy (marriage is between one man and one woman) to judicial override.
The Connecticut Catholic Conference is opposed to House Bill 5925, An Act Concerning Civil Unions, especially section three which would recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages. Currently, the State of Connecticut has a clear public policy that only recognizes marriages between members of the opposite sex. HB 5925 may well create a legal situation within our court system that would challenge that policy and this type of recognition may lead to a court decision that would force Connecticut to recognize same-sex marriage within its own borders. The proponents of this bill are well aware of the underlying legal implications of this bill.
HB 5925 would change the existing policy in Connecticut by officially giving implied recognition to same-sex marriages in Connecticut. The State would recognize same-sex marriages in Massachusetts under this legislation and the question could then be raised, that since Connecticut recognizes same-sex marriages in other jurisdictions, should it not recognize them within its own borders, among its own residents. In 2005, the legislature clearly expressed what it felt should be the proper definition of marriage in this state, that is, a union between one man and one woman. Adoption of HB 5925 would begin to erode that definition and expose current state policy to an eventual judicial override. this bill would be one more incremental step within our state to the imposition of same-sex marriage.
The future of traditional marriage in Connecticut should not be impacted by legislation, such as HB 5925, that attempts to adjust state law in assisting to make same-sex marriage in our state a reality. The Connecticut Supreme Court is currently addressing this serious matter. If the legislature wishes to raise this issue, it should do so in an open and direct manner, allowing the public to have the input that this important decision deserves. It should not adopt this legislation as a way of indirectly effecting a court decision.

Stop Planned Parenthood From Targeting CT's Youth!
Stop Planned Parenthood's Sex Ed Bill!
Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, has introduced two bills at the Connecticut General Assembly to increase the availability of "comprehensive sexual education" in our state's public schools. There will be a hearing tomorrow, Friday, February 29th, on the first bill, HB 5591, AN ACT CONCERNING HEALTHY TEENS which would "establish a competitive grant for local and regional boards of education to fund health education for teenagers."
The bill is so vague that unsuspecting legislators may not know what it is they are voting for. But recent events held by Planned Parenthood to promote this bill should dispel any doubts.
Two weeks ago, at the spot on the New Haven green where the city's high school students get off and on the buses transferring to other buses, student volunteers, who are trained peer educators for Planned Parenthood (PP), handed out condom "valentines" with statements like "a must have fashion accessory, proper attire: required for entry."
PP followed up with a press conference held last week, where their student "peer educators"-one of their main conduits into our public schools-demanded passage of this bill. The speakers expressed their desire to use the money this bill would provide to teach contraception to children as soon as fifth grade. They also expressed contempt for churches and parental rights. (You can read more about their press conference here.)
As the nation's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood should have nothing to do with the sexual education of our youth. PP's real goal is to convince teens, their future clients, that when birth control fails surgical abortion would also be "responsible parenting." to keep the abortion industry out of our public schools and away from our children.
