Will new Global Women's Issues Office Promote Abortion Worldwide?
U.S. House of Representatives approved a State Department funding bill which authorized a new "Office for Global Women's Issues."
The bill moves to the Senate and must be amended to assure the help we offer women does not include abortion.
Establishing a "Global Women's Issues Office" is about Promoting Abortion
Smith Amendment to Exclude Abortion Fails in Committee 22-17
Five Catholic Members Vote Against Pro-life Amendment
Last week the U.S. House of Representatives approved a State Department funding bill which authorized a new "Office for Global Women's Issues."
Pro-life members of Congress spoke out against this inclusion in the Foreign Affairs Reauthorization Act (HR 2410), but the bill passed despite objections from pro-life groups and an effort by pro-life Catholic Rep. Chris Smith to include an amendment that would exclude the promotion of abortion.
The Committee on Foreign Affairs rejected Smith's amendment along party lines 22-17 with the help of five Catholic Democrat members of Congress opposing it. Rep. Smith stated that his amendment would have assured that the Global Women's Office was "truly about human rights, not a stealthily masked push for abortion overseas."
The bill now moves to the senate.
The five Catholic representatives voting against this pro-life amendment were Reps. Bill Delahunt, D-MA, Albio Sires, D-NJ, Michael E. McMahon, D-NY, Joseph Crowley, D-NY, and Gerald E. Connolly, D-VA.
Please contact these representatives and express your disappointment in their failure to protect women struggling with an unplanned pregnancy and their unborn child. The assistance the United States offers women abroad faced with an unplanned pregnancy should not be aborting her unborn child. These representatives are advancing the agenda of pro-abortion women's groups.
Contact your Senator: Ask that they vote against the State Department Authorization bill unless an amendment is added that prohibits the promotion of abortion through the Global Women's Issue Office.
