Catholics must Oppose Pro-abortion Catholic Sebelius as HHS Secretary

Governor Sebelius has an established pro-abortion record at the state level. She has a long-time association with abortionist Dr. George Tiller who contributed $200k to her reelection effort.

Senate Committee confirmed Sebelius - moves to full senate

On Monday the AP revealed that Governor Sebelius underreported the campaign money she had received from notorious late term abortion doctor, Dr. George Tiller. In a questionnaire from the Senate Finance Committee, Sebelius reported that she received $12,450 when the actual amount was three time this amount, totaling $35,000.

Gov. Sebelius' association with Dr. Tiller still has not been fully disclosed. Pro-life organization Operation Rescue released the following statement revealing large donations from the late-term abortionist to a political action committee he controlled to help with her reelection bid.

Operation Rescue has released a copy of a letter signed by late-term abortionist George R. Tiller, stating that he personally contributed $200,000 to ProKanDo, a political action committee he controlled, to defeat Kathleen Sebelius’ challenger in the 2002 Kansas gubernatorial race and “make sure we have a pro-choice Governor.” Tiller also makes a plea to raise an additional $250,000 to influence the governor’s race.

The letter shows that Sebelius, who has been nominated as Secretary of Health and Human Services, still has not admitted the full extent of the financial support she has received from Tiller throughout her political career.

“This letter is the smoking gun showing that Sebelius continues to conceal the full extent of her financial support from Tiller,” said Troy Newman Operation Rescue President. “Kathleen Sebelius benefited from the hundreds of thousands of dollars that Tiller personally gave to influence the outcome of the 2002 election in her favor. This letter is undeniable evidence that Sebelius has yet to come clean with the Senate Finance Committee, and with the American people concerning her strong financial ties to abortionist Tiller.”

Sebelius lied to the Senate Finance Committee in a written statement, indicating that Tiller had given her $12,450 during her campaigns for Insurance Commissioner, but denied any further contributions. She later admitted that she received an additional $26,000 in contributions, but only after her “oversight” was exposed by Operation Rescue then verified and reported by the Associated Press.

“Sebelius just can’t seem to tell the truth about her connections with Tiller. Her continued deception in this matter makes her unfit to serve in any political capacity, much less as the head of HHS, where she will have the ability to influence abortion policy,” said Newman. “People want honesty and transparency in government, and Sebelius has proven that they will never get that from her.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue weighed in on this newest report:

“The name Dr. George Tiller is synonymous with death. By his own admission, he has performed over 60,000 abortions. His specialty is killing babies in utero who are nearly born, or are already partially born. He is a master at that. This is the same guy who lavished Kathleen Sebelius with cash when she ran for office in Kansas: he knew what he was buying—a public official he knew wouldn’t betray him. Now we know how really generous he was.

Sebelius' local ordinary Archbishop Naumann has previously asked her not to present herself for Communion due to this ongoing rejection of Church teaching.

Last month the Washington Times reported that Gov. Sebelius has reportedly obeyed her bishop's order to forego Communion in Kansas and upon being confirmed and moving to Washington will receive similiar instructions from Archbishop Wuerl.

Archbishop Naumann has been in contact with Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl of the Washington Diocese to inform him of the Kansas City prelate's discussions with Mrs. Sebelius.

A spokesman for Archbishop Wuerl said church officials in Washington would act in accordance with the admonition from Kansas City.

A Washington Examiner columnist, proclaims that a Sebelius Secretary of HHS means a boost for abortion and embryonic stem cell research. Note the folowing from Timothy Carney:

As HHS chief - especially with a Democratic Congress - Sebelius would be in position to expand Medicaid coverage of contraception and abortion, increase NIH’s focus on embryonic stem-cell research, and require hospitals to perform abortions as a condition of receiving federal money.

Fr. Euteneuer, President of HLI made the following statment on the Sebelius nomination:

The situation is atrocious. An extremist abortion hack (called the most pro-abortion governor in the nation by many), who falsely calls herself "Catholic," is given the opportunity to preside over the nation's healthcare system and normalize abortion even further; this radical is then endorsed by a US senator who also calls himself "Catholic" and who, many believe, wants her job back home when she becomes the abortion queen in DC.

From Archbishop Naumann on the CNSblog:

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kan., has been questioning Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Catholic, for her support of legalized abortion for a year and a half now, and he has asked her on at least two occasions not to present herself for Communion in Kansas.

In his latest public comment, he now says her nomination by President Barack Obama as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services is “troubling” because of her abortion stance.

The archbishop offered his most recent comments about Sebelius — summarized in a Catholice News Service report – in his column in the March 6 issue of The Leaven, the archdiocesan newspaper.

In an interview with Our Sunday Visitor, he further explains his stance.

While calling Sebelius a gifted leader who represents Catholic social teaching well when it comes to concerns such as the development of affordable housing and increasing access to health care for poor children, Archbishop Naumann strongly takes the governor to task for her long-held support for abortion.

In the interview the archbishop said he can understand why Sebelius was nominated to the federal post but reiterated that he finds it troubling. An excerpt:

“But I think from the church’s point of view, it’s sad because it places another high-profile, pro-abortion Catholic into national leadership along with Vice President (Joe) Biden and Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi and a raft of others that are in the Congress. And so I think it makes our job as bishops more challenging, because we have to be even more clear that this is not acceptable for a person in public service to say that they are Catholic and then to support these policies that are anti-life, you know go against the most fundamental of all human rights, the preservation of innocent life."
