House Passes Pence Amendment to Defund Planned Parenthood

Senate Rejects - 17 Catholic Senators Oppose Defunding Abortion Giant

 

 

 


 

Only 7 of 24 Catholic Senators vote to end Planned Parenthood Funding

The Senate defeated an amendment 58-42 that would have stripped Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider of its federal funding. The measure had previously passed the House by a 241-185 vote.

Voting to defund Planned Parenthood and its affiliates were seven Catholic senators: Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), John Hoeven (R-ND), Mike Johanns (R-NE), Jim Risch (R-ID), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Pat Toomey (R-PA), and David Vitter (R-LA).

The 17 Catholic senators that voted against the measure included; Mark Begich (D-AK), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Robert Casey (D-PA), Susan Collins (R-ME), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Tom Harkin (D-IA), John Kerry (D-MA), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Patty Murray (D-WA), and Jack Reed (D-RI).

 

 

66 Catholic Representatives Support Ending Planned Parenthood Funding - 64 Oppose Defunding - 4 No Votes

During consideration of an appropriations bill (H.R. 1) to fund all federal agencies through September 30, 2011, Rep. Mike Pence (R-In.) offered an amendment to prohibit any federal funds, from any program, from going to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) or its affiliates, which were listed by name in the text of the amendment. The Pence Amendment was adopted, 240 to 185, with one House member voting "present" and seven members not voting. The Pence Amendment was supported by 230 Republicans and 10 Democrats.  It was opposed by seven Republicans and 178 Democrats. - NRTL
