Presidential Race 2008
Candidate Profiles Of the six Catholics running for president, only Republican Sen. Sam Brownback has a legislative record on abortion that meets the church's approval. Along with Republican Rudy Giuliani, Democrat Sen. Joseph Biden, Sen. Christopher Dodd, Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Gov. Bill Richardson all have public records that are inconsistent with church teaching on abortion rights. Republican pro-life candidates include Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter. Mitt Romney ran for Governor of Massachusetts in 2002 as a pro-choice candidate; however, he since has become a convert to the pro-life cause. Senator McCain's voting record while in the Senate has been pro-life with the exception of his support for federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. Congressman Hunter also has a long history of supporting pro-life legislation in the House. Democratic candidates are staunch abortion rights advocates. Senators Obama, Clinton and Edwards covet the pro-choice womens vote, all claiming to be the biggest ally to abortion rights. Senator Clinton has receieved the endorsement of Emily's List, which has allocated over $300,000 to her campaign. Senator Edward's hired a longtime abortion rights leader and NARAL's former president, Kate Michelman as a senior adviser on his campaign. Congressional voting records for Senator's Biden, Clinton, Dodd and Obama, show a solid pro-abortion position in the Senate as does Congressman Kucinich in the House. Candidate Income After nine months of fundraising, the candidates for president in 2008 have already raised about $420 million. This presidential money chase seems to be on track to collect an unprecedented $1 billion total. By some predictions, the eventual nominees will need to raise $500 million apiece to compete--a record sum. To find out where all this money is coming from, explore the options to the left. Year-end reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by Jan. 31.(opensecrets.org) view candidate income
